Narrative
I. Injuries
During a soccer game injuries will occur. Fortunately most injuries are minor and often do not even interfere with playing. All injuries, however, must be acknowledged and evaluated, maintaining the child’s helath and well-being as a foremost concern. The following classification and evaluation/treatment guidelines will apply to GYSO:
Minor injuries: those that occur in the course of playing, e.g. minor scrapes, bumps, burises. These need evaluation by the coach or parent. Application of ice (available at concession stand) or dressing (available at equipment shack) and sitting for a time are the appropriate treatment.
Suspicious injuries: e.g. sprains, collisions or falls resulting a momentary alteration of consciousness. The player should be placed in a comfortable position, any injured part immobilized as well as possible, and ice applied if appropriate. The parent should be contacted and given the option of further evaluation at the hospital. We can provide transportation to Goshen Hospital if necessary. GYSO personnel should notify the ER if the patient chooses to be so evaluated. (535-2712)
Serious injuries: e.g. obvious fracture , loss of consciousness, significant laceration and bleeding. The injured player should be kept quiet and warm. Any injured extremity should be immobilized. Bleeding can be controlled with direct pressure. GYSO staff can arrange for emergency ambulance transport by calling the Goshen Hospital ER at 533-2712.
If any children are missing, the bus is to hold for up to 15 minutes while the transportation coordinator (TC) searches for the missing child. If the child is not found promptly, the TC is to contact a GYSO leader to seek assistance in the search. The TC is to call the B&G Club at 533-4793 for assistance in making phone calls to the child’s home. The bus driver and TC should stay in communication via cell phone or in person, and the bus will return to the Club at an agreed upon time. When the child is found, the B&G Club is notified so parent communication can be completed and an alternate method of returning the child to the Club will be determined:
1. next bus run 2. parent pick-up 3. GYSO leadership delivers 4. Club staff pick-up
Under no circumstance is the search to be stopped before the child is found.
III. Severe Weather
Should a storm approach rapidly with obvious lightening, or a tornado warning occur, all games/practices will immediately be stopped. To call attention the score board horn will be sounded 3 times. All players, coaches, and families will leave the fields immediately. GYSO leaders will assure all fields are notified and evacuated, and will gather equipment as quickly as possible. Should a very rapid onset of storm or tornado occur, all people will be directed to the Goshen College Rec Fitness Center for safety.
